What is the difference between an annual physical and a wellness exam?
With Town Center Family Practice, we can provide both annual physicals and wellness exams. Physical exams and wellness exams are both yearly appointments with a physician, but there are differences between the two types of exams.
A physical exam is generally a head-to-toe examination of your physical health, and an opportunity to address any recent health issues with a physician. With a wellness exam, you’ll be able to come up with or update a personalized preventative healthcare plan with the physician. This plan is based on your health and risk factors, and can help you prevent illnesses or manage a chronic condition. A yearly wellness exam is covered by Medicare.
Adults benefit from regular wellness exams, and so do seniors, especially seniors with chronic health issues. Also, women 21 years or older benefit greatly from well-woman exams.
What’s included in a wellness visit?
With Town Center Family Practice, we have a fully integrated medical record system (EMR) that gives us access to patient healthcare data. This allows us to access any online medical records that will inform us during your wellness visit.
A wellness visit usually consists of preventative care and health management services. For seniors, the physician will check for signs of common geriatric issues like dementia. For well-woman visits, the physician will check for many issues, including intimate health issues.
Regardless of the type of exam, the physician will typically look at the following:
- Your height, weight, and blood pressure
- Your body’s condition to check for skin lesions or suspicious moles
- The condition of your heart and lungs
- Your abdomen, thyroid glands, lymph nodes, ears, and eyes for any abnormalities
- Any signs of chronic conditions or, if you already have a chronic condition, whether it has changed at all
- Your medical and family’s health history to check for any risk factors
These services are covered once per year by Medicare.
What is covered under a well-woman visit?
Medicare also covers well-woman exams every 24 months, or every 12 months for women at high risk for cervical or vaginal cancer. These exams cover a full checkup along with:
- A pap smear
- A pelvic exam
- A breast exam
- Screenings for various diseases like breast cancer
- Shots, if necessary
- Information about how to make health-related decisions and goals for yourself
